Reminder on illegal fishing and poaching

Alert message sent 23/11/2017 16:56:00

Information sent on behalf of Bedfordshire Police

Bedfordshire Police is issuing a reminder about illegal carp and crayfish poaching in river area of Bedford.

It is illegal to set traps and nets in this area without an appropriate licence from the government’s Fisheries and Rod Licensing department.

Additionally any fishing is illegal if it could be harmful to the natural habitat of the protected species, like otters, in the area.

A number of otters were killed last winter in Bedford as a result of carp and crayfish poaching.

Anyone who witnesses this practice or who finds illegal traps located on the riverbanks is asked to report it to Bedfordshire Police on 101 or to RSPCA on 0300 1234 999.
