Theft From Motor Vehicles

Alert message sent 08/06/2018 10:04:00

Information sent on behalf of Bedfordshire Police

Dear Residents

Please be aware that there has been been several theft from motor vehicles in and around the Bedford area over the last few days.

Fuel Thefts

Diesel is being siphoned from commercial lorries and vans along the A421 around Bedford.  This often happens when drivers are sleeping.  Clearly this is not only inconvenient but extremely costly too.

Drivers, please think carefully about where you park your vehicle. if you can, choose somewhere that is well lit and covered by CCTV and make sure that the vehicle’s security measures are put in place.

Number plates are often stolen to ‘disguise’ another vehicle.  These ‘cloned’ vehicles are then used in crime.

Have you looked at your vehicle Number Plates recently?

Most of us haven’t and wouldn't have any idea how our plates are fixed to our vehicles.  Some are glued on, offenders don’t usually pick these plates as they often snap when pulled off.  Some plates are screwed on and over time the screws have rusted, these too can prove difficult to remove.  Many on the other hand are simply screwed on and are very easy to remove.

You can secure your plates by fitting clutch-head screws.  These are screws that can only be turned clockwise and you would need a special tool to remove them.  Sometimes they are called Tamper Proof Screws, these can be bought at local DIY stores or on line.

Please contact me if you would like further crime prevention advice.

Kind regards

Gill
