Garage and Shed Burglaries 7403

Alert message sent 13/06/2019 17:57:00

Information sent on behalf of Bedfordshire Police

Good Afternoon,
Last night there were several incidents involving burglaries of outbuildings/garages in the area of Potton and I would like to bring this to your attention.
It is important that this activity is highlighted to you to ensure you are aware of what crime has, or potentially may happen, within the area you reside. Please remain vigilant and ensure anything of concern to be reported directly to Bedfordshire Police, in case of emergency, please dial 999.
Please also share this information with friends/family so they understand what measures they can take to ensure the security of their property.
Remember, if you find yourself in a dangerous situation do not take any risks. Your personal safety comes first. I have highlighted some tips below.
  • Consider adding security toppings to your fence. This must be manufactured for purpose (e.g. barbed wire, razor wire, roller barriers, prickler strip or anti-climb paint). If a product is not manufactured as a security topping as its primary purpose, you cannot use it as such.
  • Gates with access to rear gardens are often the weak link in an otherwise secure area. Gates should be of the same security standard as the fence that they are attached to and be fitted with anti-lift hinges.
  • Gates should be secured using a quality, close-shackle padlock or fitted with a shroud to prevent leverage to a standard padlock.
  • Security lighting should form part of an overall security regime. It need not be expensive to install, maintain or run and provides a deterrent to intruders. Effective security lighting can substantially reduce the time available to a potential intruder by making them vulnerable to discovery.
  • If you have a garage, you can reinforce the security of the garage door by fitting a ‘garage defender’ – which prevents the up-and-over door from being raised.
  • Ensure that all garages and sheds are securely locked at all times when not in use.
Regards,
PCSO 7403 Jessica Hirst
