Blue Cross Home Direct Scheme

Alert message sent 15/10/2020 13:08:00

Information sent on behalf of Bedfordshire Police

The BHS have kindly provided us with the following information in relation to the Blue Cross Home Direct Scheme.

Blue Cross Home Direct scheme is aimed towards people who are unable to care for their horses any longer, and who wish to re-home responsibly.

How does Home Direct work?
Home Direct gives people who need to give up their horse or pony the opportunity to keep them until we can find a new home for them, rather than bringing them to one of our centres. We get a detailed history of the horse and fully assess them, as we would with any animal at our centre. We then create a re-homing profile for the horse on our website and start looking for a loving new home for them.
When we’ve found a potential new owner we’ll arrange for them to visit the horse at home for the introduction. We’ll be there to make sure everything goes smoothly. They’ll spend some time getting to know each other and, if it’s a good match, the horse will then be re-homed.

What are the benefits of the scheme?

Home Direct saves the horse from any extra stress by coming into the busy re-homing centre. It also frees up more spaces at our centres and with our horse fosterers so we can take in more pets that have no other choice, for example if they’re stray, abandoned or suffering from neglect.
Some people also like it because it means they can meet the new owner and find out more about where their horse will be living. We’ve heard many stories of the original and new owners keeping in touch after the horse has been re-homed.
Any horse can be considered for Home Direct scheme so long as they pass a health check and are not on any long term medication. We have successfully re-homed many horses from Companions to Project Horses.
For more information please contact  www.helpmyhorse@bluecross.org.uk

The Horse Welfare Team have been promoting the scheme and I have attached the poster with information which you may find useful and wish to pass on.
Horses will need to be microchipped & pass-ported, and there will also be a request for a small donation.
If anyone would like to chat further, or is interested in joining onto a Horse Welfare Team presentation about Home Direct, please do feel free to get in touch with me :  emma.truran@bluecross.org.uk
